Devlog 4 Eating Pumpking

Welcome Back!

We’re excited to share the latest updates on Eating Pumpking! This week, we focused on overcoming key challenges that were impacting the gameplay experience. From fixing bugs in portal mechanics to fine-tuning enemy behaviors, we tackled several obstacles that initially seemed complex, but through teamwork and persistence, we found effective solutions.

One of the most significant hurdles was ensuring that portals spawned in appropriate locations in the labyrinths, especially in Levels 2, 3, and 4. These levels were the most affected, as random portal placements often collided with obstacles or disrupted the flow of the map. Solving this issue required a fine balance between randomness and ensuring the portals appeared in functional, challenging positions. This was crucial for maintaining the difficulty curve, especially as we aim to create an exciting and challenging experience for players.

These improvements have brought us closer to delivering a polished and engaging game, aligning with our goal of providing a dynamic and strategic challenge that keeps players on their toes. Let’s dive into the details!

Enhancements and New Features

Invisible Random Enemy

Our invisible enemy has received an exciting upgrade. Now, while hidden, it moves randomly across the map, creating a higher level of uncertainty and tension for the player. This unpredictable mobility, combined with its invisibility, adds an extra layer of difficulty to the game.

The enemy becomes visible only when the player enters its range, at which point it switches strategies to chase Pumpking. This dual behavior makes the enemy one of the most dynamic and challenging obstacles in Eating Pumpking, requiring constant focus and quick strategies from players.

Enemy Lineup Complete

After rigorous development and testing, Eating Pumpking now features four fully implemented enemies, each with distinct behaviors:

Invisible Enemy: Stays hidden until Pumpking enters its range.

Randomly Moving Enemy: Adds unpredictability with its erratic movements.

Portal-Seeking Enemy: Actively uses portals to gain an advantage.

Chasing Enemy: Relentlessly pursues Pumpking when within detection range.

These enemies combine to create dynamic, challenging gameplay that keeps players on their toes.

Levels Ready for Action

We’ve finalized the easy levels in the game! Players can now explore carefully designed labyrinths that balance challenge and accessibility, serving as the perfect introduction to the mechanics of Eating Pumpking. The visuals, layouts, and collectibles in these levels aim to create an engaging and memorable experience.

Portal Teleportation Optimized

Teleporting via portals is smoother than ever! We addressed key bugs that previously caused inconsistencies in teleportation mechanics.

Additionally, we tackled a major issue where portals in Levels 2, 3, and 4 of the easy mode were spawning in locations they shouldn’t, disrupting the flow of gameplay. After implementing a robust solution, portals now spawn randomly in appropriate areas of the map without colliding with obstacles or boundaries. This change adds a strategic layer while maintaining a balanced and fair challenge for players.

Victory Screen Upgraded

Victory now feels even more rewarding! We’ve overhauled the victory screen, introducing animations and celebratory visuals. Players are greeted with an engaging, custom message upon completing a level, encouraging them to tackle the next challenge with renewed determination.

Bug Fixes and Optimizations

  • Portal Interaction: Fixed inconsistencies that occasionally disrupted gameplay.
  • Portal Placement: Resolved errors that caused portals to appear in invalid map locations.
  • Enemy Behavior: Fine-tuned movement and detection mechanics to ensure balanced difficulty.

Looking Ahead

Our next steps focus on making Eating Pumpking even better:

  1. Medium and Hard Levels: Developing intricate labyrinths with advanced challenges, including adjustments to enemy speeds to match the increased difficulty.
  2. Sound Design: Finalizing immersive sound effects and a fitting soundtrack to elevate the gaming experience.
  3. Tutorial Section: Adding a detailed tutorial to guide new players effectively through game mechanics.
